Released by Maj. B. Henderson

On early Friday morning, May 24, 2024, at approximately 3:40 AM, law enforcement officers from the Pittsburg Police Department were dispatched to Ascension Via Christi Hospital, in Pittsburg, regarding a report of a medical emergency involving a three-year-old child. Prior to officers’ arrival, the mother of the child, 31-year-old Maryum A. Tahirkheli, of Pittsburg, left the hospital with the child, against medical advice. Based on the nature of the emergency, it was determined the child needed to be under medical observation.

Officers began checking several locations in Pittsburg for the child, including Ms. Tahirkheli’s residence, but were unable to locate either the child or Ms. Tahirkheli. At approximately 4:55AM, officers returned to Ms. Tahirkheli’s residence and located Ms. Tahirkheli, who refused to open the door to the officers. Based on the nature of this incident concerning an apparent medical emergency, officers entered Ms. Tahirkheli’s residence, but were unable to locate the child. Officers then learned that Ms. Tahirkheli had left the child with an associate of hers at another residence in Pittsburg. Officers and Crawford County EMS responded to that other residence, which was located in the 200 block of W. Rose Street, in Pittsburg, and located the child. EMS then transported the child to Ascension Via Christi for treatment.

The child’s father was notified of the incident, and also responded to the hospital.

Ms. Tahirkheli was placed under arrest for misdemeanor child endangerment and was transported to the jail at the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office for booking. Ms. Tahirkheli is currently being held without bond.

Ms. Tahirkheli is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

This incident is still under investigation at this time. Anyone having information related to this, or other incidents, is urged to contact the Pittsburg Police Department at (620) 231-1700, or at our automated tip line, (620) 231-TIPS (8477). Callers may remain anonymous.
