Guidelines for political signage

City Press Releases

September 13, 2023

PITTSBURG, KS – With local elections approaching, please keep in mind the following guidelines for signage in the City of Pittsburg.

Article 27, Section 6 of the City of Pittsburg’s Zoning Regulations states “No sign shall be erected, constructed or maintained within the right-of-way of any street, avenue, highway, alley, or upon public ground within the city.”

Related to this is Kansas State Statute 25-2711 which reads, “… No city or county shall regulate or prohibit the placement of or the number of political signs on private property or the unpaved right-of-way for city streets or county roads on private property during the 45-day period prior to any election and the two-day period following any such election. Cities and counties may regulate the size and a set-back distance for the placement of signs so as not to impede sight lines or sight distance for safety reasons.”

Any sign placed in any of these areas prior to September 23 is a violation of these rules.
