Sober driving campaign focuses on consequences of driving impaired

Labor Day weekend is a time when many people celebrate. The Pittsburg Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind the public to celebrate responsibly and always drive sober.

The Pittsburg Police Department joins law enforcement agencies across the country in reminding drivers to Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. During the nationwide safety campaign, which runs from Sunday, August 23, 2026, through Monday, September 7, 2026, drivers can expect to see an increased law enforcement presence on local roads.

Drunk driving is illegal and deadly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, even a small amount of alcohol can affect a person’s ability to drive safely. Drivers need to be responsible. If you drink and drive, you could get arrested – or worse, involved in a traffic crash resulting in an injury or death. And it’s not cheap, either. A first-time offense can cost the driver upwards of $10,000 in fines and legal fees.

Safer Ways to Celebrate This Labor Day Weekend

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and make responsible choices before drinking:

• If you plan to drink, don’t drive. Make arrangements for a safe ride home before you start drinking.
  • Designate a sober driver.
  • Use a rideshare service or taxi.
• If a friend has been drinking and plans to drive, don’t let them. Take the keys and help them find a safe, sober way home.
• If you see a suspected impaired driver on the road, contact local law enforcement immediately. Your call could help prevent a crash and save a life.
