Traffic stop leads to pursuit, arrest

On March 4, 2018 around 0821 hours, officers with the Pittsburg Police Department attempted to perform a traffic stop with a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup in the area of 5th and Joplin. The truck fled from officers who initiated a vehicle pursuit from 5th and Grand to 5th and Joplin. The truck fled from officers who initiated a vehicle pursuit from 5th and Grand to 21st and Broadway where the truck struck a tree, causing the vehicle to roll-over and strike another patrol car. The driver of the vehicle, 27-year-old Zachary Winemiller of Pittsburg, exited the vehicle and fled on foot where he was subsequently tazed and taken into custody. No one was injured in the incident. Officers on scene located methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia as well as a handgun that had its serial number removed. They later learned that Winemiller was suspended and wanted for a Kansas Department of Corrections warrant.

Winemiller was taken to the Crawford County Jail for the following charges:

  • Flee/Elude 5+ moving violations
  • Flee/Elude Reckless driving
  • Felony Obstruction
  • Driving While suspended
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Possession of narcotics
  • Defacing a Firearm
  • Criminal Possession of a Firearm
  • Failure to Yield
  • KS DOC warrant

This incident is still under investigation by the Pittsburg Police Department.
