PITTSBURG, KS – On Saturday, May 13, at approximately 7:19 pm the Pittsburg Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 1307 North Grand.

Upon arrival at the scene, the fire department found the front porch engulfed in flames. Fire personnel immediately began an exterior attack, and disconnected electric and gas utilities.

Once the exterior fire was under control, firefighters worked to extinguish fire that spread into the structural part of the house, extending to the attic. Firefighters were able to enter the house and begin the interior attack.

Once inside, fire personnel reported the home unoccupied. A hole was cut into the roof to allow for ventilation. Once the fire was reported to be under control, with only a few smoldering areas remaining, firefighters conducted a secondary search. A small dog was found deceased in the house.

Interior crews then exited the house and firefighters continued to extinguish smoldering areas, and hot spots. Smoke continued to emanate from underneath the metal roof, so a portion of the roof was pulled back to extinguish the remaining embers.

The house sustained heavy damage. The fire department was able to protect all of the nearby exposures, and no civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

The Pittsburg Fire Department, Pittsburg Police Department, Crawford County EMS, Kansas Gas Service, and Evergy responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time. The Kansas Fire Marshal’s office is investigating.
