The Pittsburg Police Department is organized into three primary divisions: Administration, Operations, and Investigations. Each division plays a vital role in supporting the department's mission.
Administration
The Administrative Services and Records Division provide access to public records. Individuals may request a criminal report or accident report. Requests can be made in person, or they can call ahead.

Enforcing city ordinances and state laws governing the care, treatment, and ownership of both domestic pets and other animals
The Pittsburg Animal Shelter houses stray or abandoned animals that are in some instances available for adoption.
Transferring dogs and cats to the Southeast Kansas Humane Society for adoption when able

Operations
The primary function of the Patrol Division is to conduct routine street patrol and respond to calls for police services. The division patrols 141 miles of city streets.
Staff/Equipment:
The patrol officers strive to obtain specialized skills and certifications beyond minimum requirements to aid in meeting the diverse needs of our citizens.
The Pittsburg Police Department's bicycle unit is nationally certified through the International Police Mountain Bike Association. Through the use of their patrol cycles, the officers increase community engagement, increase visibility, and discourage crime. The bike officers provide an increased law enforcement presence in highly congested areas where vehicular methods prove difficult, such as special community events, parks, and schools. They are also used for targeted patrols in high-crime areas due to their enhanced versatility.
The Pittsburg Police Department utilizes a Special Response Team (SRT) for tactical response to critical incidents. These incidents include:
Barricaded suspect situations
High-risk apprehension
High-risk warrant service
Dignitary protection
Investigations
The Investigations Divisions primary function is to conduct in-depth investigations and follow-up contacts generated from the Patrol Division and direct citizen complaints on crimes. Additionally, the Investigations Division works with other agencies and task forces to impact crimes such as illegal narcotics trafficking in an effort to bring those perpetrators to justice.

The Drug Enforcement Unit's primary function is to conduct in-depth investigations, and follow-up leads generated from the Patrol Division, direct citizen complaints, and self-indicated leads.
The Crime Analysis Unit is tasked with reducing uncertainty in the Department’s decision making process by providing insight into crime patterns, trends, and problems.
The Crime Analysis Unit also provides investigative support to the Patrol and Criminal Investigations Division.
The Real Time Information Center (RTIC) enhances public safety by providing officers and investigators with timely information and technological support when it matters most. By utilizing tools such as camera systems, automated license plate readers, crime analysis, and other investigative technologies, the RTIC helps the Pittsburg Police Department respond more effectively to incidents, locate suspects and missing persons, recover stolen property, and support ongoing investigations. The RTIC serves as a central hub for information sharing and real-time intelligence, helping officers make informed decisions while strengthening the department's commitment to keeping our community safe.
