Overview of Building Inspections
Our Building Inspectors ensure that buildings within the City of Pittsburg, KS are safe to occupy and do not pose a hazard to our residents. Performing inspections and ensuring that structures are up to code reduces the risk of future emergencies that could lead to costly damage or injury to the resident.
All building permits issued by the City of Pittsburg are required to be inspected by one of the City Inspectors. Below is a list of items that will need to be inspected. If there is ever any question if an aspect of the project will need to be inspected, please contact us at 620-231-4170 or at permitservices@pittks.org. Please note that inspections are performed on a first-come-first-served basis, so please provide at least 2 hours’ notice before the requested inspection time. Required Inspections
Foundation
Includes footings
Framing
Includes sheathing
Rough-In
In-wall electrical, mechanical, and plumbing need to be inspected while they are visible.
Above Ceiling
Above ceiling electrical, mechanical, and plumbing needs to be inspected while visible.
Pre-Pour Concrete
Before concrete is poured, the area should be inspected for correct depth and rebar support.
Roof
Includes the pre-layover inspection if needed, the decking inspection once the shingles are torn off, and the final inspection.
Temporary Service
If temporary electrical service is needed, it must be inspected before service can be turned on.
Underground Electrical
Fire
Finals
All inspections need to be completed before a Certificate of Occupancy can be given.
Plumbing Permit
Plumbing pressure test (if needed); plumbing rough-in; and final inspection
Electrical Permit
Electrical underground (if needed); electrical rough-in; and electrical final
Mechanical Permit
Mechanical rough-in and mechanical final inspection
Demolition Permit
Sewer capped and inspected, and a final inspection (must be graded and seeded).
Roofing Permit
Pre-layover (if needed); decking; and final inspection
Fence Permit
Framing and final inspections
Electrical Meter Back
If the electricity has been turned off for more than 6 months, it is required to be inspected before it will be turned back on.
Gas Pressure Test
If the gas has been turned off for more than 6 months, it will need to have a gas pressure test and pass inspection before it can be turned back on.
