The City of Pittsburg invites community members to attend two ribbon-cutting ceremonies celebrating recent community improvements and preservation efforts.

Atkinson Municipal Airport Ribbon Cutting

The first ceremony will be at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, at Atkinson Municipal Airport, 3510 Airport Dr., Pittsburg, recognizing the completion of significant airport reconstruction projects including the parallel taxiway, City hangar taxi lane, and connector taxiway repair and surface treatment.

The airport is also working on an updated focused airport layout plan. The project is a focused study to provide the City of Pittsburg with guidance for the future of the airport, including terminal area development, pavement rehabilitation needs, investigation of a self-service fuel system, and other potential improvements.

Immigrant Park Ribbon Cutting

A second ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, at Immigrant Park, 106 2nd St, Pittsburg, honoring local artist Gary Lofts and Pittsburg Beautiful for their efforts to preserve and share the history of the immigrants who helped build Pittsburg and southeast Kansas.

“These projects reflect the community’s pride and partnerships that continue to strengthen Pittsburg,” City Manager Daron Hall said. “We look forward to celebrating both the improvements at our airport and the important work of Mr. Lofts and Pittsburg Beautiful to preserve the stories and history that helped shape our community.”

Both events are open to the public.
