Wastewater Division Responsibilities

The Wastewater Division is responsible for the safe collection, transportation, and treatment of wastewater generated by residential, industrial, and commercial customers and to protect the environment and natural resources against water pollution.

Wastewater Facilities

The City of Pittsburg wastewater facilities consist of a sewage collection system and a wastewater treatment facility.  The sewage system consists of underground pipes designed to carry domestic sewage from bathrooms, sinks, kitchens, and other plumbing components to a wastewater treatment facility where it undergoes various treatment processes before it is ultimately discharged into the environment. 

Wastewater Collection

The Wastewater Collection Division is responsible for maintaining the sanitary sewer collection system that collects and delivers wastewater to the Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment.

Wastewater Treatment Facility

The City of Pittsburg owns and operates a sewage treatment plant that is predominately biological in nature and the plant is mechanically and electrically complex requiring operations and maintenance staff to be skilled and well trained in process and maintenance activities.

Prohibited Discharges

The sanitary sewer system should never be used for disposal of anything other than domestic wastewater.  Disposal of chemicals or hazardous substances such as:

• Fats
• Oils
• Grease
• Petroleum products
• Solvents
• Paint
• Anti-freeze

to the sanitary sewer system may cause damage to our environment and create potential safety hazards for City workers and residents alike.

 How to Report a Problem:

Sewer backups and/or odors can occur, and you should report them to the Wastewater Division if you experience either. Report it by calling Public Utilities at (620) 240-5126 during business hours. If this is an after-hours, weekend or holiday emergency, call the Water Treatment Plant at (620) 230-5630, which is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
