PITTSBURG, KS – The Memorial Auditorium & Convention Center is teaming up with the Pittsburg State University Music Department to host Sonidos del Corazón: Music Under the Stars on Friday, September 19 as part of PSU’s month-long Hispanic Music Festival.

Music Under the Stars is free to the community and tickets are not required. The outdoor pre-show block party starts at 5:00 p.m., with the main show starting inside the Memorial Auditorium at 8:00 p.m.

This lively celebration will take place on the beautiful landscape of the north lawn of the Memorial Auditorium with a block party from 5:00-7:30pm, featuring the PSU Hispanic Banda, food trucks, and traditional dancing in a festive, family-friendly atmosphere. Following the outdoor fun, the evening continues inside the Memorial Auditorium with a special performance by the Latin Grammy nominated band Making Movies—known for their vibrant fusion of rock, cumbia, and spoken word.

ABOUT MAKING MOVIES:

Founded by Enrique Chi—a songwriter, musician, filmmaker, and activist—the Latin Grammy-nominated Making Movies serves as the primary platform for Chi’s creative mission. Rooted in the rich traditions of Panamá, a crisol de razas, the band’s sound is an embodiment of those diverse cultures, offering listeners a unique experience that feels both extraordinary and familiar. Described by NPR as “Perhaps one of the most unique groups around today, Making Movies is sensual, smoky, and seductive.” The band’s accomplishments include collaborations with legendary artists like Rubén Blades, performances at major international festivals, and tours with notable acts such as Los Lobos, Ozomatli, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Las Cafeteras, and Flor De Toloache. Chi is also producing AMERI’KANA TV, a National Endowment for the Arts-funded documentary series that explores an alternate history of American music, continuing their mission to inspire and educate. Their next studio album is set to be released in early 2025.

The band is committed to representing their mixed identity of Black and Latino culture and has been a vocal influence in the national health conversation around music as medicine.
