Stream advisory for Cow Creek

City Press Releases

September 19, 2025

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a stream advisory for Cow Creek near the City of Pittsburg and Highway 160.

The City of Pittsburg is working with the KDHE to address operational adjustments related to the construction of a new wastewater treatment facility, scheduled for completion in 2027. These modifications are necessary to support long-term improvements in the City’s wastewater infrastructure.

Staff continue to adjust treatment processes as needed to handle changes associated with the waste streams the plant receives.

The KDHE staff have been on-site to review ongoing efforts and work with staff to ensure compliance with permitting.  As a precaution, the KDHE advises that residents stay away from the streams and if you live or have activities near these streams, do not enter the stream or allow children or pets to enter it.

The City of Pittsburg remains committed to protecting public health and the environment and will continue working closely with KDHE throughout this process.
