The City of Pittsburg Parks & Recreation Department is offering new sessions of Dog Obedience classes and Puppy Kindergarten classes beginning Tuesday, February 6. Sessions will take place Tuesday evenings at Lincoln Center, 710 W. 9th St., Pittsburg.

Recreation Superintendent Sara Vacca says these group classes benefit pet owners and their canine companions alike.

“Obedience classes provide owners with essential tools they need to communicate with their pets and keep them safe,” says Vacca. “These group sessions also teach dogs important social skills, so they learn how to interact with other dogs and people in a healthy way.”

Dog obedience class is designed for dogs six months of age and older. The six-week course teaches positive-based training with a clicker to promote correct behavior, walking with a loose leash, coming when called, sitting, staying on command, and more. Dogs do not accompany their handlers to the first class. Six-foot nylon or leather leashes are required – no flexi/retractable leashes will be allowed. The same handler is required to attend every session with their dog. This class session takes place Tuesday evenings at 7:15 pm and runs through March 13. Cost to participate is $65.00.

Puppy kindergarten classes are for puppies from nine weeks to six months of age. Class instruction includes positive-based training with a clicker to promote correct behavior, manners, socialization, house training, chewing and more. Puppies do not accompany their handlers to the first class. Six-foot nylon or leather leashes are required – no flexi/retractable leashes will be allowed. The same handler is required to attend every session with their dog. This five-week session meets Tuesday evenings at 6:00 pm and runs through March 6. Cost to participate is $55.00.

Registration deadline for both classes is Tuesday, January 30. Participants may register by phone at (620) 231-8310, in person at 710 W. 9th St., or online at https://pprd.pittks.org.
