Annual Hydrant Testing and Flushing by Pittsburg Fire Department to Commence April 8

Fire News

April 2, 2024

PITTSBURG, KS – Pittsburg, April 2, 2024 – The Pittsburg Fire Department announces the commencement of its annual hydrant testing and flushing initiative, scheduled to begin on April 8, 2024. This comprehensive undertaking ensures the optimal operation of hydrants throughout the city, serving to maintain our esteemed ISO rating of 2 and guaranteeing the highest standard of safety for our community.

Significance of Hydrant Testing and Flushing:

Hydrant testing and flushing are essential procedures aimed at ensuring the functionality and readiness of our hydrant system. While both are critical, hydrant testing is a more involved procedure and a longer process. Therefore, we will only test two zones annually and flush the rest. This approach essentially ensures operation to capacity and then shuts the hydrant off, maximizing efficiency and minimizing disruption to residents.

Minimizing Disruption, Maximizing Service:

While every precaution is taken to minimize any potential damage to properties during the testing and flushing processes, the Fire Department acknowledges the possibility of such incidents. Residents are encouraged to promptly report any damage by calling (620) 231-1870. Our dedicated team will swiftly address and rectify any issues.

Testing and Flushing Zones:

The testing and flushing activities will commence in Zone 8, encompassing the southeast end of town, from Broadway to the eastern city limits and from Quincy to the southern city limits. Concurrently, flushing will take place in Zone 4, spanning from Broadway to the eastern city limits and from 4th Street to 20th.

Subsequent phases will proceed as follows:

– Testing: Zone 7, covering Broadway to the western city limits and Quincy to the southern city limits.

– Flushing: Zones 4, 3, 2, 1, 6, and 5.
