The Pittsburg Public Library serves the residents of Pittsburg, Kansas and the surrounding communities as a member of the Southeast Kansas Library System (SEKLS).  This beautiful, historic Carnegie Library was opened in 1912 and has deep roots in the community.  The Pittsburg Public Library has a physical collection of over 65,000 items along with access to a wide array of digital resources. The Library offers programs for all ages, a computer lab, and Bookmobile home delivery.  The Library Director manages an annual budget of more than $1 million, with a staff of 16 FTE.  The Director also serves on the Board of the Friends of the Library and serves as Executive Director of the Pittsburg Public Library Foundation

 

Position

· Library Director of the Pittsburg Public Library

· Exempt, full-time position (40-hour work week), typically Monday-Friday, one evening shift/week, occasional extended hours for meetings, programs, and community events

· Benefits package includes health, vision, and dental insurance, KPERS retirement plan (Kansas Public Employees Retirement System), paid holidays, and paid time off

· Starting Salary Range: $66,851–$83,283

Position Summary

· The Library Director for the Pittsburg Public Library works under the direction of the Library Board of Trustees to develop, supervise, and coordinate the work of the Library

· The Library Director performs managerial duties related to personnel, budget, collection development, building maintenance, library operations, and ensures conformity to the policies established by the Board of Trustees

 


Qualifications

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs library services to meet the immediate and long-range goals of the library and the community

· Oversees the daily operations of the library, including staff, resources, and services

· Facilitates and participates in Board of Trustee meetings; administers board policies; reviews, updates, and makes policy recommendations to the board

· Supervises personnel: Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates library employees and volunteers in accordance with library policies and legal requirements. Fosters a positive work environment and provides opportunities for professional development.

· Prepares annual budget for Board review and approval, and administers expenditures within approved guidelines

· Maintains accurate records and completes all system and state reports

· Develops a long-range plan for the library, based on patron and community needs

· Coordinates fund raising, investments, and grant writing for the library

· Supervises and delegates the selection, acquisition, processing, organization, and weeding of a balanced and comprehensive collection of print, non-print, and digital materials that meets the diverse needs and interests of the community

· Oversees, develops, and executes a range of services and programs for all ages (children, teens, and adults) to address community needs

· Supervises maintenance of library building, equipment, and furnishings

· Represents the library at community, civic, and other groups both for community involvement and library promotion

· Keeps informed of current developments in library field by attending workshops, professional meetings, and reading current literature

· Serves as Executive Director of the Pittsburg Public Library Foundation

· Serves as ex officio member of the Friends of the Library

· Undertakes other duties and functions as needed for the operation and management of the library

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

· Knowledge of the principles and practices of professional library science and administration, including budgeting and personnel management

· Strong leadership, communication (oral and written), and interpersonal skills

· Proficiency with library automation systems, computers, and current technology, including social media

· Ability to work effectively with the Board of Trustees, municipal officials, community groups, and the general public

· The ability to analyze challenges, think critically, and find effective solutions to a variety of library related issues

 


Requirements

Required Qualifications

· Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution

· A minimum of five years public library management preferred

· A valid driver’s license may be required for official library business

· Must successfully pass a background test and drug screening
