Vegetation Coordinator

he primary function of this position is to perform in the advanced maintenance of Parks and Recreation buildings and facilities, grounds and equipment. This position must be able to operate any equipment within the Parks system. The Coordinator is the Primary Forester and is responsible for the care and maintenance of all parks landscaping as well as coordinating with community groups on beautification projects. The Coordinator will assist staff in the maintenance, inspection and completion of projects and repairs. This position will supervise the seasonal mowing and landscaping crew as directed by the Superintendent.


  • Responsible for scheduling forestry crew and their performance; coordinates the scheduling of the seasonal mowing crew;
  • Oversees and assists with the daily and advanced maintenance of the Parks grounds and facilities; performs advanced lawn/landscape care including chemical application;
  • Interacts with outside organizations for parks and community beautification projects;
  • Responsible for the coordination of trash removal for all Park areas and the Downtown District;
  • Runs heavy equipment as needed for projects or as requested by supervisor
  • Assists in cases of inclement weather and disaster emergencies; operates snow plows and sand/salt distributors as needed in winter
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures; works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions
  • Staying current on all certifications by attending classes;


  • Advanced knowledge of arborist techniques and practices
  • Knowledge in one or more of the construction trades; Knowledge of building and safety codes;
  • Ability to read and interpret project plans and specifications;
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance procedures;
  • Knowledge of and skill in operating various types of light to heavy equipment;
  • Ability to take and follow directions from supervisor
  • Ability to direct and manage staff as needed
  • Ability to manage one’s own emotions and responses. Ability to build trust and work well on a team.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, staff, contractors and customers and the general public.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to maintain records.


  • High School or GED required. Two-year vocational degree or certificate preferred.
  • Two years of experience in heavy equipment operation, including equipment that requires a valid Commercial Drivers License OR two years of general construction trades and techniques experience.
  • Valid CDL Driver’s License
  • Advanced knowledge of forestry with two years of experience is also required.
  • Preferred: General knowledge of forestry, parks system and/or sports field maintenance.
  • Experience with building, facility, grounds and/or equipment maintenance.
  • Certifications preferred: Arborist training, Kansas Commercial Applicator’s license 3 A/B and OSHA 10 must be able to obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Experience with vegetation control and chemical application, plus understanding of safety standards and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS); basic math skills required to mix chemicals properly.
