Sanitation Worker II

POSITION SUMMARY

The City of Pittsburg is seeking dedicated and hardworking individuals to join our new sanitation team. As a sanitation employee, you will be responsible for the collection and disposal of solid waste and recyclables throughout the city. This position plays a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of the city’s streets and neighborhoods.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collection and disposal of solid waste and recyclables from residential and commercial properties.
  • Operation of heavy and specialized equipment such as trucks and compactors.
  • Monitoring and reporting any issues related to sanitation services, such as overflowing dumpsters or damaged equipment.
  • Adherence to safety guidelines and procedures during waste collection and disposal.
  • Maintenance of inventory levels for supplies and equipment and reporting any shortages or damages to the supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Physical stamina and ability to lift and move heavy objects.
  • Familiarity with heavy machinery and equipment operation.
  • Good driving skills and a clean driving record.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and follow instructions.
  • Attention to detail and ability to identify potential safety hazards.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with colleagues and the public.

Requirements

EDUCATION

On-the-job training is provided to familiarize workers with the sanitation procedures, equipment, and safety protocols. Candidates must possess a minimum of a commercial driver’s license (CDL) Class B with air brake.  Candidates may also be preferred for this position if they have experience with operation of heavy equipment and machinery.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The working conditions for a sanitation worker are typically outdoor, requiring long hours and physical labor. Workers may be exposed to various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snowfall. Noise, dust, and odors can also be common in this line of work. Schedules may include early morning, evening, or nighttime shifts and may involve working on weekends or holidays. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. A work physical will be required before starting work.
