Part Time Customer Service Specialist I (20 hours weekly, KPERS retirement eligible)

Location: Pittsburg, KS

The primary function of this position is to provide professional customer service and assistance to citizens with water services, utility payment processing, and assisting with permit applications, business licenses and inspection requests.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

*Responds appropriately to customer questions and concerns, etc., and direct phone calls or escort customers to appropriate staff for assistance;
*Receives, reviews and processes applications for utility services;
*Prepares and processes orders for City services including but not limited to water turn-on & turn-offs, water meter installation, meter tests, meter re-reads, checks for leaks and verifies services;
*Inputs, retrieves and updates customer data and account status into the computerized financial system.
*Processes utility payments, checks payment for accuracy, makes decisions regarding payment arrangements, bill adjustments, and small dollar write-offs, prepares receipts, records or other documentation of payment and account status;
*Communicates with staff on departmental business;
*Manages and reconciles cash drawer;
*Assists with a variety of permit applications, including but not limited to garage sales and building permits;
*Assists with the maintenance and management of business licenses and the issuance of Trade Cards for licensed trade personnel operating within the City;
*Receives inspection requests from contractors and contacts the appropriate inspector.


Knowledge of:

*Customer service procedures and techniques, including, but not limited to effective listening, problem solving, and conflict resolution;
*Cash handling and balancing procedures;
*Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite applications and related/applicable hardware;
*Must possess professional communication skills, both verbal and written;
*Must possess excellent people skills including, but not limited to how to build positive relationships, work as a part of a team and understanding nonverbal communication;
*Recognize and maintain a level of confidentiality regarding City business.


High school diploma or GED equivalency. Associate Degree or Vocational/Technical certification preferred.

One (1) to three (3) years general clerical experience and/or customer service duties and responsibilities.

Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
