Custodian – Police Department

Location: Pittsburg, KS

Salary Range: $12.24 – $19.84


Under the supervision of the Administrative Major this role maintains the facility interior and exterior and its related entities. This role also assists in scheduling of events, preparing for, setting up, and tearing down of events/meetings.


  • Maintains the cleanliness of the building (interior and exterior), which includes but is not limited to the following duties:
    • Daily trash removal from the building
    • Dusts surfaces / baseboards as needed
    • Sweeps / vacuums carpets and tile weekly
    • Mops floors as needed
    • Cleans / sanitizes restrooms, to include restocking of toilet paper, paper towels, and soap dispensers
    • Cleaning break rooms and kitchens throughout the building
    • Keep breakrooms stocked with needed supplies as outlined by supervisor
    • Cleans windows throughout the building as needed
    • Change lightbulbs throughout the building
  • Repairs and painting as needed, or as requested by supervisor, throughout the building.
  • Purchasing of any and all items needed for the maintenance or repair of the facility (to include cleaning supplies, paper products, tools, etc.).
  • Purchase of items for each division within the building; to include, but not be limited to; floor mats, desks, chairs, appliances, etc., and assembly of these items as needed.
  • Scheduling and maintenance of the fire alarm system, which includes scheduling the fire alarm checks, escorting the vendor throughout the facility, and assisting with performance of checks throughout the building. Monthly fire extinguisher checks throughout the facility and scheduling Fire-X for routine facility checks within the building and vehicles.
  • Completion of quarterly KMIT facilities inspections / checklists.
  • Obtain and maintain OSHA certification (i.e. OSHA 10 & OSHA 30). Maintains and updates the Material Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Shares the department event / meeting calendar with the Human Resources Manager. Responsible for set up of rooms for meetings / trainings / events, to include but not be limited to; Commission Meetings, Planning and Zoning Meetings, Citizens’ Academy, in-house training, awards ceremonies, etc.
  • Any other duties deemed necessary by the Chief of Police or direct supervisor to meet the needs of the department


  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of cleaning and maintaining public buildings.
  • Operate, maintain, and perform minor repairs to custodial equipment, including but not limited to; vacuums, strippers, waxers, buffers, shampoo cleaners. Operate handheld custodial equipment, such as brooms; dust and wet mops; dust pans; dusters; etc.
  • Experience with the preparation, use, storage, and disposal of chemical cleaning agents, as well as, the appropriate use of cleaning agent for various surface types.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures when cleaning and moving furniture.
  • Ability to utilize computers, software (Microsoft Outlook / Microsoft Word), and office equipment to meet the needs and objectives of the department; up to and including the proficient use of email and online ordering through various outside distributors.
  • Understands compliance with DOL/KDOL/OSHA/KMIT and other compliance agencies as indicated and directed.
  • Ability to critically think and provide solutions for problems in the absence of direct supervision.
  • Ability to read and understand budget line items for the purpose of staying budget compliant.


  • High School diploma or GED equivalency
  • Valid driver’s license
  • OSHA certification preferred, but department will pay for training and certification.
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • Must be able to pass an extensive pre-employment background check.
