The City of Pittsburg is seeking an experienced, visionary and servant leader for the position of Chief of Police. With a population of 20,223, Pittsburg the largest city in Southeast Kansas. We’re home of the Pittsburg State University Gorillas, excellent public and private elementary school districts, and top manufacturers and small businesses in the Southeast Kansas region. Pittsburg is a vibrant community with lots of family friendly events, concerts and restaurants and we’re continuing to grow with new housing developments, parks and trails, and fun community events.

The Chief of Police reports to the City Manager and is responsible for leading a department of 52 sworn officers and 24 civilian staff with a budget of $5.7 million. The Chief of Police plans and directs the activities of the Administration and Operations Divisions which include, but are not limited to, crime prevention, enforcement of criminal and traffic statutes and ordinances, community instruction, accident and criminal investigations, patrol activities, animal control, criminal history records and municipal court.

Salary Range is $56,450 – $93,563 annually depending on experience, plus KP&F Retirement, health plan and other benefits.

To apply, candidates must meet the following criteria:

*Bachelor’s degree from a four year accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Political Science or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
*15 years as a certified Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Kansas, with at least 5 years of Command level rank and supervisory experience
*Successful completion of an extended management training program such as the Southern Police Institute, Certified Public Management, FBI Academy, Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command or relevant management experience
*Must have skills and capacity for collaborative leadership and team building and sensitivity to the diversity and emerging community needs
*Must have demonstrated ability to develop and administer a budget and take a proactive approach to anticipating and planning for future department growth
*Must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license
*Must reside within an 8 mile radius of City Hall
*Must pass an extensive background check, polygraph, psychological exam, drug screen and physical
*Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially public speaking and presentations
